Traditional Owner-Led Reef Water Quality Improvement Program

The Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owner-Led Water Quality Improvement Program is aimed at delivering on ground, Traditional Owner-led outcomes for Reef and catchment Country and communities.

The Program’s goal is to support and further develop the knowledge, skills, leadership and custodianship of Traditional Owners in managing and improving water quality within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and catchment areas.

How the Program will be delivered

The Program is funded by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, and will be delivered in two phases. NAILSMA is responsible for working with Reef and catchment Traditional Owners for the delivery of Phase One.

Phase One will include the establishment of a Traditional Owner–Led Reef Water Quality Advisory Group. Once established, the Group will provide strategic advice and input into the design of Phase Two of the Program.

When the Advisory Group finishes its work, a Traditional Owner-Led Reef Water Quality Technical Working Group will be established to continue Phase One.

This part of the Program will include delivering a range of support for Reef and Catchment Traditional Owners, such as development of grant writing skills, capacity and capability development initiatives for looking after water on Country and collaborative information sharing opportunities.

Phase Two will be delivered under a separate process to be determined. It will be informed by the Advisory Group’s advice and will involve the establishment of a grant program.

NAILSMA is only engaged to deliver Phase One of the Traditional Owner-Led Reef Water Quality Improvement Program.
