Girringun Aboriginal Corporation - Cardwell Indigenous Ranger Unit (CIRU)

Girringun Traditional Owners represent nine traditional owner groups. Active since 1996, Girringun aim to provide leadership, direction and assistance in the provision of sustainable outcomes for the improvement and positive development of the social, cultural, spiritual, environmental and economic well-being of Aboriginal Traditional Owners and community members of Girringun for the benefit of the region.

Located near Hinchinbrook Island, the rangers manage 200km of coastline and 60,000km2 area. This includes Wet Tropics, World Heritage and Great Barrier Marine Parks areas. Girringun has made extensive contributions to the culture and natural resource values of their region including intergenerational knowledge transfer, cultural heritage protection, mapping and management, and have a TUMRA, specifying the management of dugong and marine turtle. An Indigenous Ranger Group is in operation to manage the Land and Sea  country of Girringun.
