Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers

The Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers started in 2008/2009. The team has a ranger coordinator, senior rangers and seven rangers - three women and four men. The Ranger Base is located at the Jean Jimmy Centre next to the Council in Mapoon.

The Rangers look after 183,000 ha of Mapoon DOGIT (Deed of Grant of Land in Trust) lands including 70 km of coastline and three main river catchments. The DOGIT is the traditional lands of Tjungundji, Yupungathi, Warrangku, Taepithiggi and Mbakwithi clans.

The community of Mapoon lies at the mouth of the Wenlock River on the western coast of the Cape York. The main aim for the Rangers is looking after the community, culture and country.
