Youth Leadership

At the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd (NAILSMA) we believe the future of northern Austraia relies heavily on the next generation of Indigenous leaders. It is estimated that Indigenous people will make up 50% of the north Australian population in the next 20 years, with young people making up a high percentage of this population.

Why are we involved?

Our strong belief is that future generations carry enormous responsibilities and obligations for managing and developing much of Northern Australia. Emerging Indigenous leaders need to have the tools to be able to manage and develop their country, while maintaining their identity and culture.

We have held a Youth Forum to bring young Indigenous people together to discuss leadership issues and opportunities. We have drawn on our significant networks to develop a program of assistance building on what Indigenous leaders and families are already doing and assisting in very practical ways with what they aspire to achieve.

‘The renaissance of Indigenous land and sea management, following large scale settler displacement of people and their applied knowledge and expertise, is led by senior Indigenous knowledge holders and involves rebuilding and enhancing the pathways for younger community members to grow up the next generation of Indigenous land managers.’

- Joe Morrison, CEO, NAILSMA.

A particular focus today is on helping young people to grow their capacity and boost their confidence in both customary and western forms of management.

This is now a central theme in our approach to working with communities and their young men and women across the region.

Building youth leadership

With assistance from Virgin Unite, we are engaged in a scoping exercise to take this work further.

This exercise will inform the development of a practical and strategic program to assist land managers in growing a strong and confident future.

The research will be complete in late 2012.
