Policy Group Achievements

NAILSMA issued a Indigenous Water Policy Statement in 2009 that asserts Indigenous peoples' intent for equitable participation in water reform processes. The IWPG focussed overall on developing policies relevant to water access, rights and other community aspirations for water reform, such as social and cultural, ecological, economic and political aspirations.  Strategic outcomes of the IWPG over its 2010-2012 funding arrangement with the National Water Commission included:

  • research that defined and qualified commercial and non-commercial Indigenous access to water in the NT Oolloo and Mataranka Water Plan areas and the QLD Nicholson sub-catchment and Mitchell catchment areas; and
  • raised awareness and improved participation in water planning processes and government policy decisions through regional community forums.
