Message from the Chairman
With the transformation to the new incorporation, NAILSMA Ltd is entering an exciting era of reform, innovation and opportunity in northern Australia.
I am honored to be the inaugural Independent Chair of NAILSMA Ltd, a company that has been preparing to consolidate its business to offer improved efficiencies for Traditional Owners and communities across north Australia for many years.
Since inception, NAILSMA has been at the forefront of key issues confronting Indigenous people in the north including water policy and planning, Indigenous livelihoods, carbon, sea country management, turtle and dugong conservation, biodiversity conservation, data management and climate change. By collaborating with rural and remote Indigenous communities and their organizations we have been able to create innovative methodologies aimed at valuing Indigenous Knowledge whilst creating new livelihood opportunities – crucial in a rapidly changing global environment.
Of course we value other stakeholders in the region that are central to the success sought by Indigenous people for a better and more fulfilling life. These include the pastoral, mining, fishing, tourism and conservation sectors.
Recent carbon farming measures passed through the Federal Parliament are indicative of the changing global dynamics where Indigenous people can explore opportunities to build resilience for our communities whilst remaining on their lands, if they choose to do so.
It is not the time for “business as usual”, with new challenges come opportunities and NAILSMA, with the Indigenous community is poised to take on those challenges after many years of building its reputation and ability to deliver complex yet rewarding projects that aim to support Indigenous land and sea managers that have repeatedly stated their long standing and unmatched obligations to care for their country, on behalf of all Australian.
To grow collaborative and collegial approaches to the management and development of our country will remain fundamental to the consolidation and development of the new services we seek to provide.
Innovation, creativity, Indigenous leadership and inspiration are key themes that will underwrite the new direction for our company and most importantly, our communities and Traditional Owners will remain central to our approach.
Peter Yu, Chairman
