Maningrida students Learning on Country

  • The North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) delivered two days of dedicated I-Tracker training to Maningrida College senior students in February 2014, as part of the Learning on Country Program.

    The Learning on Country Program (LoCP) aims to improve school attendance and completion, improve the opportunities for students to create a satisfying and rewarding career in their community or elsewhere in Australia, and prepare the next generation of Yolngu and Bininj landowners to care for their estates which are of national and international significance. The Dhimurru, Djelk, Gumurr Mathakal and Yirralka Rangers have entered formal partnerships with their community schools, and the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Managers on Groote Eylandt plan to have their Learning on Country school partnership in place soon.

    The I-Tracker program’s involvement in the LoCP is a natural progression of previous training and activities involving a vast range of community members. The I-Tracker program provides ranger groups with on-ground training, ongoing technical expertise and resources to support skills development and has long-standing partnerships with the ranger groups involved in the LoCP.

    Maningrida College proudly supports its commitment to the LoCP in partnership with the Djelk Rangers. This year over 20 students in both the Middle and Senior years are enrolled in Conservation and Land Management Certificates I and II. This focus aims at developing the student’s skills, knowledge and confidence toward an employment pathway within the various natural resource management sectors operated by the Djelk Rangers.

    Proficiency in the use of I-Tracker and other CyberTracker applications has become an essential part of ranger work, and recently recruited Djelk Rangers joined the students on day one of training for the general introduction. I-Tracker training develops skills capacity and meets the assessment process for the students near completion of the CALM Cert II unit ‘Record Information about Country’.

    NAILSMA staff member Erica McCreedy said the Maningrida college students gave their full attention, actively participated, and demonstrated they were interested in developing new skills and learning about the I-Tracker program. Students were presented with a ‘Certificate of Participation’ at the completion of the training for use towards their accredited training qualifications.

    Learning on Country at Maningrida places a strong emphasis on ‘two-way’ learning, incorporating western science and traditional knowledge and culture into the program’s delivery. Senior LoCP students will continue to use I-Tracker applications on a weekly basis to record all of their field-based activities and CALM training exercises.
