Carbon Network

Meeting at Barapunta (Arnhem Land) July 2012

The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCCEE) has provided funding for a preliminary Communications Project in relation to the opportunities available to Indigenous communities through the government's Clean Energy Futures Initiative - in particular in relation to existing fire and emissions abatement projects.

The project is of a preliminary nature and will focus on initial consultation with Land Councils and land management groups to determine

  • what kind of information the groups want/need,
  • best ways of delivering the information; and
  • how would the groups like to be involved in the generation and delivery of information.

It further aims to get project relevant materials designed and produced, where possible/desirable, and to establish a web presence to communicate relevant and accessible information.

Finally, the project seeks to establish a network of Indigenous representatives from across the savanna region to facilitate better communication flows into land management groups and out from them and Traditional Owners. The intent is to discuss this network idea with Land Council and land manager groups to ascertain interest and design.

The timeframe for this scoping project is 31 December 2012. It is planned to then use the project outcomes to source funds to implement a project relevant communications strategy (including information materials etc.) from 2013 and beyond.
